Evaluation and document requests for .tr domain names are handled by the registry, TRABIS.

If TRABIS requests documents for a com.tr, net.tr or .tr domain name you have applied for through Backorder, we will notify you.

In addition, if you place a backorder for a .tr domain name on the TAKIL list, TRABIS requires documents supporting the domain name application (trademark certificate, tax certificate, certificate of activity, registry certificate, trade name information published in the Turkish Trade Registry Gazette, etc.) and a declaration form (petition).

This practice is based on the ICTA (BTK) document Procedures and Principles on Restricted Domain Names (opens in a new tab).

You can download the declaration form as a Word file and view its PDF version. All forms are available in the Forms section of the .TR Domain page.

You need to submit your documents by clicking the "Upload Document" link next to the relevant domain name under "Services → Pending .tr Domain Name Transactions" in your METUnic control panel.

Which signs can be registered as a trademark?

Words, figures, letters, numbers, colors, sounds, three-dimensional shapes, motion marks, holograms and, rarely, scents or tastes can be registered as trademarks. Upon the trademark owner's application, a new registration certificate with the same content as the original is prepared and delivered; the trademark's protection period does not change. The appeal must be filed within 2 months of the notification date. For the appeal, a power of attorney and, where necessary, documents proving actual ownership of the rights and use of the trademark may be requested.

What is an opposition to a trademark bulletin publication?

Trademark applications approved by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) are published in the Official Trademark Bulletin for two (2) months. During this period, existing trademark owners can file an opposition against applications that are similar to their own trademarks; if the opposition is upheld, the trademark in question may be partially or fully rejected. When filing an opposition, a power of attorney and, where necessary, documents proving actual ownership of the rights and documents showing use of the trademark may be requested.

What is license registration?

License registration is carried out to grant the right to use a registered trademark, or one in the registration process, to other persons or companies for a specific period and fee without transferring ownership. Applications with a positive evaluation are published in the Official Trademark Bulletin and are registered if no opposition is filed during the two (2) month publication period.

Is a trademark registered in Türkiye also valid abroad?

What should I keep in mind when renewing a trademark?

The renewal request must be made within the six (6) months before the protection period ends; otherwise, the protection period expires. An expired trademark can still be renewed within six (6) months of the expiry date, provided that an additional fee is paid. Who can use gTLD domain names?

There are no user restrictions on gTLD domain names (.com, .net, .org, .info, .pro and others). Individuals, companies, associations and institutions, whether in Türkiye or anywhere else in the world, can register these domain names without providing any documents.

Although most extensions suggest a particular purpose (for example, .com for commercial sites and .org for organizations), this is not a requirement; you can choose the extension that best fits your needs and your brand.

What are the advantages of gTLD domain names?

gTLD extensions are recognized worldwide, letting you present your brand with a memorable address that is familiar outside Türkiye as well.

  • International recognition: Visitors are used to these extensions, so they remember your address easily and visit it with confidence.
  • Fast, document-free registration: No documents are required to apply; your domain name is ready to use in a short time.
  • Wide choice: You can choose from a range of extensions for your commercial, corporate, informational or personal project.
  • Brand protection: By registering the gTLD versions of the same name alongside your .com.tr domain name, you can protect your brand from being used by others.
Who has the authority to allocate gTLD domain names?

gTLD extensions are operated by registries authorized by ICANN, the organization that manages the internet's domain name system. For example, the .com and .net extensions are operated by Verisign, and the .org extension by Public Interest Registry (PIR).

Registries do not sell domain names directly to end users; registration is carried out through ICANN-accredited registrars. As an ICANN-accredited registrar, METUnic registers gTLD domain names directly, with no intermediary.

Is it safe to use a gTLD domain name?

Yes. gTLD domain names are registered in accordance with ICANN policies and procedures and are the most widely used extensions worldwide, which gives your visitors a trustworthy impression.

Because METUnic is an ICANN-accredited registrar, your domain name is registered directly with the registrar, not with an intermediary. You can also use our Security Packages to protect your domain name against unauthorized transfer and deletion.

How do I register a gTLD domain name?

First, check whether the domain name you want is available using the domain search box. If the domain name has not been registered by someone else, add it to your cart, choose the registration period and complete your payment; no documents are required for gTLD domain names.

Some extensions have premium domain names set by the registry. Premium domain names have different pricing and a different registration process; to get a price quote and register one of these domain names, you can open a support ticket specifying the name you want.

The gTLD domain name I want appears to be in use. What can I do?

The gTLD domain name system works on a "first come, first served" basis. So if the domain name you want has already been registered by someone else, there is no service METUnic can offer you for that domain name. In this case, you can apply for a different domain name.

What should I keep in mind when getting a domain name with a gTLD extension?
  • Your domain name must be 2 to 63 characters long.
  • You can use the letters A-Z, the digits 0-9 and the hyphen (-). A hyphen (-) cannot be used at the beginning or end of the domain name.
  • Choose a memorable name that is relevant to your website content.

  • Choose a domain name that points visitors to your content and is SEO-friendly.
  • Avoid confusion between English and Turkish characters.
  • Choose a domain name that is easy to type and read, and avoid misspellings.

How do I register a .bbs.tr domain name?

.bbs.tr is one of the undocumented domain extensions: no documents are required during application and registration, and there is no user restriction. To register:

  1. Type the name you want with the .bbs.tr extension (e.g. example.bbs.tr) into the search box on the homepage and click Search.
  2. If the domain is available, add it to your cart; log in to your customer account or create a new one.
  3. Complete the payment; your domain is registered in your name through TRABIS.

If the name you apply for is on the Restricted Names List (TAKIL) or the Closed Names List (TAKAL), TRABIS may request documents under the ICTA (BTK) document Procedures and Principles on Restricted Domain Names (opens in a new tab); in that case a Declaration Form is submitted. .bbs.tr is a second-level domain intended for institutions and organizations that provide BBS (Bulletin Board System) services.

Which documents must be submitted for domain names on the TAKIL list?

TAKIL is the name TRABIS gives to its “Restricted Domain Names” list. Because of the terms contained in a domain name, TRABIS may request documents when it deems necessary under the ICTA (BTK) document Procedures and Principles on Restricted Domain Names (opens in a new tab).

After applying for a domain name on the TAKIL list, you need to submit documents supporting the domain name (trademark certificate, tax certificate, activity certificate, registry certificate, trade name in the Turkish Trade Registry Gazette, etc.) and a declaration (petition). If you do not have these documents, you may upload images of the declaration and your Turkish ID card to the system and wait for TRABIS's evaluation.

You can find the declaration form and a filled-in sample in the Forms section. You can submit your documents via the “Upload Document” link next to the domain name under “Services → Pending .tr Domain Name Operations” in your control panel. The “Upload Document” button becomes active within 10 minutes after your payment. Evaluation of documented domain name applications may take up to 15 business days, depending on the TRABIS workflow and workload.
