Domain names fall into two groups: gTLDs (Generic Top Level Domains) and ccTLDs (Country Code Top Level Domains). gTLDs are extensions such as .com, .net, .info and .org. ccTLDs are domain names formed from country abbreviations, such as .tr, .de, .us and .uk.

The top-level domain for Türkiye is .tr. There are second-level domains created under .tr.

Extensions such as .com.tr, .net.tr and .org.tr are registered without documents; however, if the domain name is on the Restricted Names List (TAKIL), TRABIS may request documents under the ICTA (BTK) document Procedures and Principles on Restricted Domain Names (opens in a new tab). For documented extensions such as .av.tr, .bel.tr, .dr.tr, .edu.tr, .gov.tr, .k12.tr, .kep.tr, .mil.tr and .pol.tr, documents are submitted together with the Request Form for Documented Domain Names. Transfer

Registrar-to-registrar transfer

To move your domain name from another provider to METUnic, or from METUnic to another provider.

What is an registrar-registrar transfer?

A registrar-registrar transfer is the process of moving a domain name from another registrar to the METUnic panel or a domain name from the METUnic panel to another registrar.

How can I transfer my domain name from another registrar to METUnic?

You can follow the steps below to transfer your domain name from a different registrar to METUnic:

  1. The transfer lock must be removed from the registrar where your domain name is located.
  2. You need to obtain an “Authorization Code” from the registrar. This code is required for the transfer of your domain name to METUnic.
  3. For the domain name you want to transfer to METUnic, click the “Transfer” button on your control panel and type your domain name. Then enter the authorization code in the relevant field.
  4. Complete the transfer application by paying the transfer fee.
  5. The transfer fee is equivalent to one (1) year’s payment of the domain name and the duration of the domain name is extended by one (1) year when the transfer process is completed.

*For the transfer of a domain name that already has a five (5) year term, one(1) year fee is charged, but a one (1) year extension is not available.

How can I transfer my domain name to a different registrar?

To transfer your domain name to a different registrar, follow these steps:

  1. In your control panel, go to “Services → My Domains”.
  2. Click the “Info” button to the right of the domain name.
  3. In the transfer lock section, select “Unlock the registrar lock so the domain name can be transferred.” to disable the transfer lock.
  4. Click the “Show Transfer Authorization Code” box.

To start a transfer, at least 60 days must have passed since the domain name was registered and since it was transferred to its current registrar.

What is an EPP code and why is it required?

The EPP code is a type of approval code used to ensure security during domain name transfer. You can transfer your domain name securely by receiving this code from your old registrar and forwarding it to your new registrar.

How long does the transfer take?

Internal transfers between accounts are completed within 24 hours, and transfers between registrars are completed within 5-7 business days. If you want to speed up the process, you can confirm your transfer request through the registrar where the domain name is registered.

Internal transfer (between METUnic accounts)

To move your domain name from one METUnic account to another METUnic account.

What is Internal Transfer?

Internal Transfer is the process of moving a domain name from one METUnic panel to another METUnic panel.

This process, which was previously called Transfer Between Accounts and performed with a form, has been made undocumented / online to make it simpler and more convenient for users.

How to make an Internal Transfer?

You can perform the Internal Transfer process, which you can perform in a documentless way, from the “Internal Transfer” menu on the user panel.

You can access the illustrated explanation in our blog guide “METUnic İç Transfer Nasıl Yapılır?” (in Turkish) (opens in a new tab).

What are Sending Account and Receiving Account?

The sending account is the name given to the panel where the domain name is currently located. If the receiving account initiated the Internal Transfer, it is the account that makes the decision to approve or reject the Internal Transfer process initiated for the domain name.

The receiving account is the name given to the new panel to which the domain name will be transferred when the Internal Transfer is initiated. If the sending account initiated the Internal Transfer, it is the account that makes the decision to approve or deny the initiated Internal Transfer for the domain name.

How many days does it take to complete an Internal Transfer?

In order for the Internal Transfer transaction to be completed, the deciding account must approve the transaction. The email regarding the domain name for which an Internal Transfer transaction has been initiated is sent to both the receiving and sending account.

If no action is taken by the deciding account for the relevant Internal Transfer transaction within five (5) days, the transaction is automatically canceled.

After the online Internal Transfer request is initiated, if approval is given, the transfer is completed within fifteen (15) minutes.

Is there a fee for internal transfer?

Internal Transfer within METUnic is free of charge.

What happens if the Internal Transfer is not approved?

In order for the Internal Transfer transaction to be completed, the customer panel where the domain name is located will be expected to give approval within five (5) days. Internal Transfer requests that are not approved within this period are automatically canceled.

If you have any problems with the process, you can contact us through the channels on the Help/Support page and get detailed information about the subject.

How are domain name related transactions affected by the Internal Transfer process?

If you perform an Internal Transfer in the METUnic panel, the services connected to the relevant domain name are also transferred.

Services such as routing, DNS and NS records are moved directly to the receiving account’s panel.

In which cases is an Internal Transfer possible?

If your domain name is registered with METUnic but not in your account, you can transfer the domain name to your account via Internal Transfer.

For this process, if you are in contact with the METUnic account where the domain name is located, you can complete your transfer request instantly by giving mutual approval.

What are the situations where the Internal Transfer transaction will be canceled?
  • If the receiving or sending account whose approval is expected within the scope of Internal Transfer does not respond to the request for five (5) days, the transfer transaction will be canceled automatically.
  • If the receiving or sending account whose approval is expected within the scope of the Internal Transfer declines, the transaction will be canceled.
  • METUnic reserves the right to intervene in special circumstances.

FAQ

.TR Domain Names FAQ

Which documents must be submitted for domain names on the TAKIL list?

TAKIL is the name TRABIS gives to its “Restricted Domain Names” list. Because of the terms contained in a domain name, TRABIS may request documents when it deems necessary under the ICTA (BTK) document Procedures and Principles on Restricted Domain Names (opens in a new tab).

After applying for a domain name on the TAKIL list, you need to submit documents supporting the domain name (trademark certificate, tax certificate, activity certificate, registry certificate, trade name in the Turkish Trade Registry Gazette, etc.) and a declaration (petition). If you do not have these documents, you may upload images of the declaration and your Turkish ID card to the system and wait for TRABIS's evaluation.

You can find the declaration form and a filled-in sample in the Forms section. You can submit your documents via the “Upload Document” link next to the domain name under “Services → Pending .tr Domain Name Operations” in your control panel. The “Upload Document” button becomes active within 10 minutes after your payment. Evaluation of documented domain name applications may take up to 15 business days, depending on the TRABIS workflow and workload.

What is TRABIS?

TRABIS stands for the “.tr” Network Information System. This system enables the operation and updating of the central database of domain names with .tr extension and their ownership, the creation and monitoring of whois, and the real-time processing of domain name application transactions.

What is the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA/BTK)?

It is the institution that regulates and supervises the telecommunications sector in Türkiye.

ICTA/BTK is authorized to make the regulations it deems necessary, to inspect Registrars and DRSP/UÇHS within the framework of the legislation, and to impose the necessary administrative sanctions, including termination of Registrar and DRSP/UÇHS activities.

What is a Registry Agency (RA/KK)?

It is the party that mediates the transactions related to domain names such as application, renewal, and cancellation. METUnic has completed TRABIS accreditation and handles .tr domain transactions as a registrar.

What is a Dispute Resolution Service Provider (DRSP/UÇHS)?

It is defined as a party that conducts the dispute resolution process related to domain names through Panelists.

What is the Restricted Names List (TAKIL)?

It is the list of domain names whose registration is restricted by the registry for various reasons (historical or cultural values, values that belong to the public, etc.) and for which documents are requested during the application.

The rules for applying the list are set out in the ICTA (BTK) document Procedures and Principles on Restricted Domain Names (opens in a new tab).

What is the List of Names Closed for registration (TAKAL)?

It is the list of domain names that are not allowed to be allocated by the registration authority for reasons such as being contrary to legislation, public order and public morality.

How do I apply for a domain name?

You can find an illustrated explanation about the application in our blog guide “Alan Adı Başvurusu Nasıl Yapılır?” (in Turkish) (opens in a new tab).
